Did you call Stephenie Meyer's books a "literary triumph"? You're kidding, right? Come on, it may not be as awful as critics call it, but raping a thesaurus and using purple prose does not equal "literary triumph." And did you just compare William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette to Twilight? Just, no. Shakespeare worked hard on his plays, he spent years perfecting his craft and put in years of effort into them. And Romeo and Juliette was satire! And the reason it's on the curriculum is because of the way it's written. He's not one of the most endearing play writes in history for nothing! If Kid's could read Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales without a translator, it would be in the curriculum, too. (It isn't here, not sure about other places) Due to the author pushing the boundaries of the English language and showing what could be achieved. That's what the greats of Literature do. They push the boundaries of English and make us think and question while we're reading.
Stephenie Meyer is a debut author with purple prose, simplistic writing and no character development in her story. It has potential, sure, but to laud it as "literary triumph" is an insult to literature. I can practically hear Mark Twain spinning in his grave as I type.
Stephenie Meyer has potential, but she needs to hone her abilities.
I get it, Edward looks good. Shesh I don't need paragraphs upon paragraphs telling me about his eyes. And I certainly didn't see Bella become strong as the story progressed. She dumped poor Jacob on his ass for Edward and then Jacob (creepily) imprints on Bella's daughter. It may not be Stephine's intention but I was definitely creeped out.
As for Stephen King being jealous, he's a household name. I doubt it has anything to do with jealousy.

But I would like to thank you for refraining to give immature reasons in your post. Definitely better than "Edward is soooo Hawt so there!" I'm used to seeing. Well done.

"So I suspect what King really disagrees with isn’t Meyer’s writing ability, but her worldview. And her massive book sales. "

Oh yeah. Because Stephen King doesn't sell millions of books every year, right?
In fact, he certainly hasn't sold over 350 million copies of his novels whereas the Twilight saga only just manages 100 million.
And Stephen King isn't always noted as people saying how incredibly good he is at writing literature.

Yeah, it must be because Stephen King is jealous of Stephanie Meyer, right?

Oh wait.
